The first symposium commemorating the establishment of “Next-generation Neutrino Science and Multi-messenger Astronomy Organization” was held on 1-2, November, 2023 in UTokyo Kashiwa Campus.
The predecessor organization, “Next-generation Neutrino Science Organization (NNSO)”, was launched in October 2017 in cooperation with the Institute for Cosmic Ray Research (ICRR), the Kavli Institute for the Physics and Mathematics of the Universe (Kavli IPMU), and the School of Science in the University of Tokyo. The Earthquake Research Institute also joined this organization in 2019. The purpose of the NNSO was to pioneer the future of neutrino physics developing neutrino research techniques and detector technologies. In particular, the NNSO promoted its flagship facility, the Hyper-Kamiokande. In October 2023, the NNSO was reorganized into the “Next-generation Neutrino Science and Multi-messenger Astronomy Organization” to expand our research activities into the field of multi-messenger astronomy. The new organization promotes multi-messenger astronomy, which is based on collaborative research with disparate “messengers”: electromagnetic waves (Radio, Optical/Infrared, X-ray, Gamma-ray), cosmic rays, neutrinos, and gravitational waves, coordinating the observation groups and experts in theory and data science.
The symposium was attended by 108 researchers not only the NNSO members but also people from Chiba University, Kyoto University, Tohoku University, Waseda University, Osaka University, National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, Gifu University, and Tokyo City University. After the opening address by the NNSO President Takaaki Kajita, 32 researchers made presentations and answered questions from participants.
